SMC Fancontrol is outstanding and is a must for any Macbook Pro owner. My fans will adjust almost instantly when changing profiles. Right click on this display and it will bring up it’s menu. Look up in your menu bar icons (date-time, battery status, wireless) upper right corner of your display. When you double left click on the SMC Fancontrol the program will run. The bottom is just a little bit warmer but not anywhere close to the blistering temperatures before. I can lay my hand on the top surface and over the speaker grills and the heat is only slightly warm. The following are indicated by iStat Pro with my fans running at 3500 RPM: HD 97F, CPU 115F, Airport Card 125F, Enclosure Base 88F, GPU 135, GPU Heatsink 115, Heatsink A 113F, and Heatsink B 103.Īs you can see my Macbook Pro is running considerably cooler than without SMC Fancontrol. When I am not playing games and multimedia I setup a higher rpm profile that keeps my fans turning at 3500 rpm. The GPU diode used to run up to around 165F and now is hovers between 125F and 130F. When I am watching movies or playing games I setup a multimedia profile that runs my fans to 6000 RPM. Additionally, my Macbook Pro is quite a bit cooler to the touch. My Macbook Pro is running a lot cooler and now I have no worries about overheating. If it were not aimed upwards, most of the air flow would be striking around the middle of the back.SMC Fancontrol is a fantastic program and works as designed. The aiming upwards is to minimize the air flow under the computer, so as to reduce dust collecting at the bottom air intake. It is aimed upwards, mainly at the upper left corner, as you face the screen, where it gets the hottest. It is a small clip-on fan mounted to the wall on a bracket to avoid vibration, with the blades only about 6" away from the back. Macs Fan Control allows you to monitor and control almost any aspect of your computers fans, with support for controlling fan speed, temperature sensors. When I feel the back of the computer getting kind of warm - and I often run without it during the winter - I turn on the fan behind. No amount of blowing air around is going to help much when it's like that. If it gets that hot, as it did during a searing heat wave we had a few weeks ago - it was 110F outside and in the low 90s inside - I just sleep the computer. My "hottest" setting is at approx 2K, but I never need to use it or the "hotter" setting. You will find it's impossible to set the sliders for an exact figure. Next setting is approx 15-20% of the previous setting and so on. I don't know what the exact idling rpms are for the 27, but your first setting should be about 15-20% above whatever those are, for each of the three fans. The 27, with bigger fan blades, idles the fans a bit lower to get the same air flow. However in order not to damage your machines smcFanControl doesn't let you set minimum speed to a value below Apple's.
So you can increase your minimum fan speed to make your Intel Mac run cooler.
smcFanControl lets the user set the minimum speed of the build-in fans. These are based on the defaults of my 21.5, which has faster defaults than the 27, I believe. smcFanControl controls the fans of every Intel Mac to make it run cooler. My settings are based, starting with the defaults, on raising all three fan rpms incrementally by approx 15-20%. I constantly monitor the HD and CPU temps from iStat Menus, which displays them directly in the Menubar. During the winter, I'm usually at the defaults or, possibly, at my "minimum minus" setting, which is 227 rpms above the defaults, for the drive. Occasionally, if it's really hot here, I might go up to the "hot" setting, which is about 400 rpms above the default for the drive. This increases the drive fan, for example, by 292 rpms above the defaults. I hardly ever run higher than my "minimum" setting. No need to go above the defaults if things remain that cool. At least experiment using the defaults to see if the temps remain in that low range. With those temps, which are quite low, you can probably stay at the defaults.
